To the editor:
When I look at what is happening in our country I can see some similarity to the nation of Israel and the sin of worshiping idols.
There were many idols (false gods) that were in the Gentile nations around them. When they were in Egypt and understood the idols that they worshiped we can see that each one of these plagues were not only against the Egyptian people but a defeat of the gods they worshiped. Showing the Egyptians and Israel that none of these idols could stand against the only true God.
Before the nation of Israel entered the land of Canaan God gave them commandments that they were to have no other gods and they were not to make any graven images (Exd. 20:3-5). He told them that when they entered Canaan that they needed to destroy the inhabitants and to burn their gods (Duet. 7:25-26). In failing to do so they brought curses instead of blessing and finally exile to another land.
In our country today, we may not see the statues of the other gods as did the Israelites but there are many other gods (idols) that we do see. Many today idolize great preachers, actors, actresses, athletes, baseball, football, worldly wealth, money and even themselves to name a few. The list goes on.
We hear comments about having to see, having to be, just can't miss, etc. Of the millions of people that live in this country I believe that the numbers we would find that truly love and worship the only true God would be staggeringly few compared to those who don't.
When we look to the truth of God's word we find in Isaiah 45:5 "I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God besides me" And that God gives warning to Israel in Duet. 11:26-28, "I set before you this day a blessing and a curse."
Blessings if we obey His commandments and curses if we don't. I believe we as a nation have fallen under the curses of God and are on a path of destruction if we do not repent.
