When are we going to say 'enough' to racism?
To the editor:
Hot tears rolled down my face early last Monday morning as I read The Sentinel in disbelief. The horrific killing of 10 Black persons over the weekend by a teenage white supremacist was less than a half page story buried on page 5.
Interestingly, the news that made the front page is a historical museum that will open in 14 days, two articles of the upcoming primary elections, and another article of a Pa. elected official who had a light stroke.
Page 2 is a full ad for hearing aids. Page 3 has a long article on the headline news of the Supreme Court and Roe v. Wade, along with an article on school students honoring Law Day which ironically "provides an opportunity to reflect on how the legal process protects Americans' liberties and strives to achieve justice." Page 4 is the Opinion page. And finally, on Page 5 we find the article on the victims.
When are we going to say "Enough!"? When are we going to stop being complicit in racism? Thirteen people were shot, and 10 died because of their skin color. They went to the grocery store on Saturday and never went home, because they were Black. Because an 18-year old thought he was superior to them because his skin is white.
According to the layout of The Sentinel today, are the stories of upcoming historical buildings opening in 2 weeks, and upcoming elections bigger stories than the murder of 10 Black persons?
My prayer all day has been "Lord, have mercy," because He does see the oppressed. Today, I stand with the beloved community and weep with them. I lament their great loss, and I name the sin of racism.
