Let us not ruin nature in the name of 'progress'
To the editor:
I went to the doctor on Sandy Lane today. I had to stop in my tracks when I saw a glimpse of the future. There on the ridge in front of me, behind the Mifflin County High School was the ugliest sight in our beautiful area. It was a very large solar array. A mass of black and metallic geometric grids in no particular design. It is, in short, an eyesore compared to the tree-lined ridge that had been there.
Is this our future? Has the metamorphosis to mass green energy started in Mifflin County? I certainly hope not. This is an assault on nature by progressive zealots. Wind towers may be next. Another assault on the beauty of nature. A similar assault of late is the construction of single family homes smack dab in the middle of farm fields. It's your land. You can do what you want with it but to farmers it is an abomination.
It is not the first time it has happened. Even South Main Street in Lewistown was once a farm. Green Gables was the farm's barn. You can't have progress and large increases in population without change. Try and imagine acre upon acre of similar solar arrays in the place of corn fields. When their shelf life has expired will the owners follow through and replace them or abandon them? How much fossil fuel will be needed to manufacture and replace them? This is not an exact science, be careful what you wish for.
These changes even here in Mifflin County left unchallenged will choke out nature eventually, just like the farm on South Main Street. I hope a non-nature destroying alternative to fossil fuels is near, because what I saw today made me sick!
