The 12th annual Walk for Warmth was held on Feb. 26 at Kish Park in Burnham.
The event is held each year in February, when temperatures are low, so that walkers could imagine what families who are struggling might endure.
This year's 40 walkers braved cold temperature and snow to come support this worthy cause. This event is co-hosted by United Way of Mifflin-Juniata and the Mifflin-Juniata Human Services Department.
This year's Walk for Warmth raised $5,800, which will assist 16 households with heating. All proceeds support the local Mifflin-Juniata Energy Bank, which provides heat and rent assistance to families who fail to qualify for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funding due to income ineligibility or those 60 or older.
We want to give a special thanks to the Stone Arch Players for making their lobby area available to the participants and Fame EMS for helping us provide a safe event.
Thank you to the three energy providers who supported this year's event: Roy E. Berrier & Sons, Oakland Fuel Oil and Snedeker Energy.
A genuine appreciation goes to the MERF Radio team for promoting the event and Matt Witzel for providing fun, upbeat music and a great atmosphere. Another special thanks to Randy Hughes for offering an opening prayer. We also would like to thank Dunkin' Donuts for providing hot chocolate to all the walkers on a very cold morning.
Finally a huge thank you is given to all the walkers who endured the cold and to those who supported the event by contributing. Your continued support and dedication is greatly appreciated.
This event reminds all of us that real people in our community count on and benefit from the services that the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata supports.
