Fight an unfortunate reminder of need for sportsmanship

With coverage from Sports Illustrated, NBC, Fox, CBS, TMZ and USA Today, two communities in Pennsylvania are famous. Oh, wait. Wrong word. They’re infamous. With minutes to go in a PIAA boys basketball playoff game and Uniontown battling to mount a comeback against Meadville Area High School, a fight broke out in the stands. Then it spilled onto the court, where more fans and some players joined in. Now seven people are facing either charges or citations, among them a member of Uniontown’s team who was cited for disorderly conduct and an adult fan from Uniontown who was ...

If AOC is Democratic future, party worse off than we think

Even Will Rogers might be hard-pressed to come up with an appropriately harsh jibe about the current state of the Democrats. “I am not a member of any organized political party,” the 20th century humorist famously said. “I am a Democrat.” Now, the problem isn’t a lack of organization per se, but the hangover of their dogged, dishonest support for a comprehensively failed presidency, joined to an irrational commitment to outlandish positions on cultural issues. The Democrats shouldn’t be shocked that after insisting that Joe Biden was hale and hearty and fit to serve ...

Dems should stop rescuing Republicans

Chuck Schumer is right, and James Carville is right. They don’t want the Democratic Party getting pulled into MAGA’s cyclone of ruinous policy. To get to safety, they are reining in the left flank for whom the fight is all. The hotheads don’t recognize that bad timing loses battles. Senate Minority Leader Schumer took a good deal of incoming after he pushed his caucus to help pass the Republicans’ continuing resolution, thus not causing a government shutdown. The ensuing chaos would have rattled Americans more than Donald Trump and Elon Musk have already done. Do Democrats want ...

Ka-Ching! Money talks in the sports world

Good or bad, the name West Shore Home might not have rolled off so many tongues in Nittany Lion Nation as it did this past week or so. That’s because the Pennsylvania-based home remodeling company signed a landmark naming-rights partnership for Penn State’s Beaver Stadium valued at $50 million over 15 years. That’s right, the Nittany Lions’ den will be known as West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium, starting with the 2025 college football season. Many Penn State fans took to social media to share their displeasure of the board of trustee’s decision. While Penn State ...

Governor’s office does not respect accountability

Two scandals confronting our state, in our view, converge on one underlying issue. A state senator from Allentown has noted that in 2024 alone, Gov. Josh Shapiro spent at least $300,000 in tax dollars on flights. While that cost by itself should concern Pennsylvanians worried about the fiscal future of their state, there is a possibility — perhaps even a likelihood — that the actual cost was higher. “The data provided by PennDOT is woefully inadequate,” Sen. Jarrett Coleman said, according to The Center Square report published in Wednesday’s Sun-Gazette. “The PennDOT ...

Trump must keep abreast of new threat

The COVID-19 pandemic is essentially a scourge of the past, although it has not been defeated completely. Unfortunately, though, what is happening at this time in Africa’s Democratic Republic of Congo, if it remains a mystery for very long and remains unchecked, could evolve into something even more horrific than the horrors that COVID-19 inflicted. This country must mobilize whatever protective measures and resources it can muster to try to ensure that Africa’s current challenge never reaches America’s shores. But even those most optimistic regarding America’s capabilities ...
