Classes have already begun for four of a county's school systems. The doors for the remaining five will soon open.
It's an exciting time for children in Lycoming County and throughout the nation. It's a time their thoughts turn again to their futures, and to what course they will take to get to those futures.
Before we turn to advice for students and their families, we find it necessary to remind motorists to exercise greater caution in the mornings as those children are making their way to school. Stop for stopped school buses. Pay attention to the sides of roads and streets and be aware if young children need to cross. Drive at a prudent speed.
Jersey Shore Area School District Superintendent Dr. Brian Ulmer, speaking to the Sun-Gazette for our in-depth look at the return to classes in the Aug. 19-20 edition, perhaps had the best advice: "As students prepare for school the best thing their loved ones can do is to make sure that they are ready for the daily routine of school."
We hope parents and guardians heed this advice. The reliability of a routine certainly helps students adjust to the school year's schedule.
East Lycoming School District's superintendent, Dr. Mark Stamm, and Montoursville Area School District's assistant superintendent for curriculum and communications, Daniel Taormina, also had great advice for parents and for children returning to school.
"Keep them focused on learning in whatever way excites them," Stamm said.
"Take advantage of every opportunity given to you," Taormina told the Sun-Gazette.
Help your children adapt to a set schedule. Help your children find ways of understanding their lessons that work for them. Encourage them to seek out opportunities to find what they love and what could blossom into a career -- into a future.
We believe we all want to see our youngest family and neighbors succeed, and we believe this advice will help youngsters find those successes.
