Second Amendment is all that is needed for law-abiding citizens to have a gun

“The only justification that any law-abiding American citizen needs to carry, purchase or own a firearm is the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.”

We agree with U.S. Rep. Fred Keller’s words quoted above and in Monday’s edition of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette and appreciate the tireless advocacy of Keller, R-Kreamer and U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Howard, for our rights under the Second Amendment.

Keller’s remarks were in response to the U.S. Supreme Court striking down a New York state law that made the process to secure a concealed-carry permit too burdensome.

“States that seek to bog down people in red tape in order to lawfully carry need to stop conflating gun violence with those citizens who are just seeking to protect themselves,” Thompson said in a news release.

Thompson, like Keller, is correct. States should respect that the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness sometimes require the reassurance of personal protection. Americans, in some instances, need to be armed for their own safety. And Americans have the capacity to each decide when that measure of personal safety is necessary.

Keller also is correct that the work to ensure Americans enjoy their Second Amendment rights is not over.

“We must continue to advocate for and safeguard all our rights enshrined in our Constitution and paid for by the sacrifices of our service members,” Monday’s Sun-Gazette reported Keller as saying.

We are thankful that our region’s lawmakers understand the role the play as advocates for our individual rights and we wish them success as they continue to advocate for those liberties as enumerated in the Bill of Rights.
