Now, more than ever, the community should support its local athletes

2 min read

While we are certainly aware that local high school athletes have already been hard at work preparing for the upcoming season, we want to especially recognize them now.

For this week sees the beginning of mandatory full-fledged practice for local fall sports teams -- those that compete in football, soccer, field hockey, cross country, volleyball, tennis and golf. That also means the season itself is drawing ever closer. In fact, the first varsity football games are slated for Aug. 27, just a week from this Friday!

As the athletes toil in preparation for that first game and what is hopefully a successful season, we urge the community to show its support.

Come to the games. Wear the school colors. Cheer for the kids. Donate to the booster clubs or frequent their fundraisers when you can.

Many of you out there reading this right now once played high school sports. We feel confident in saying you probably enjoyed it more when you believed the community really cared about the team.

Now it's time for us to pass that on to the current generation of athletes, especially when many had to play in empty to nearly-empty facilities last year because of COVID-19 -- if they even got to play at all.

We wish the best of luck this season to all of our local athletes. We'll be there to document what happened, and hopefully, the community will be there to cheer you on.

Go Huskies, Indians, Tigers, Thunder, Lions, Eagles, Mustangs and Trojans!

Starting at /week.
