Our dear mother, Edwina "Winnie" Mohler Hartman, 89, of Lewistown, passed away Sunday, Aug. 23, surrounded by family at Brookline Rehabilitation Facility.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Hartman, with whom she enjoyed 67 years of marriage until his passing in Jan. 2024.
Born Oct. 12, 1936, in Lewistown, Winnie was the daughter of the late Josephine Sheaffer Mohler Stokes, stepfather Elmer Stokes and father Edwin Mohler, who died when she was 18 months old. She was raised by her grandparents, Edna (Jordan) and Joseph Sheaffer, and a special aunt, Pauline Sheaffer Clare.
Winnie was a 1954 graduate of Lewistown High School, where she participated in the school choir and class play. Following graduation, she worked in the cashier's offices at Lewistown Hospital and then Lock Haven Hospital while her husband attended college. Later in her career, Winnie worked in the office at Glick's Shoe Store and subsequently for the Mifflin County School District, where she remained until her retirement.
Winnie and Bill enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe. She found great joy in watching her grandchildren participate in sports and other activities and cherished every opportunity to support them. Winnie also enjoyed playing cards, cheering on Penn State football, dining out with family and friends, and spending time with her dog and faithful companion, Jade.
A devoted woman of faith and service, Winnie was a longtime member of Trinity United Church of Christ, where she served as church president and council member, sang in the choir, played piano for Sunday school, and volunteered in the church kitchen. In more recent years, she became a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served on the Administrative Council and continued her volunteer work in the kitchen. Winnie also dedicated many years of service to Meals on Wheels and volunteered at Lewistown Hospital.
She is survived by her children: Brent Hartman and wife, Lori, of Milroy, Deborah Hartman Grube and husband, Jere, of Manheim, and Cory Hartman and wife, Michelle, of Texas; grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Megan Hartman Taylor and husband, Jason, Jay Hartman, Rachael Grube Horvath and husband, Jeff, Amanda Sweger and husband, Aaron, Melissa Grube, Hailie Hartman Moore and husband, Riyo, Zachary Hartman and wife, Trina, Jacob Strohecker and wife, Emily, and Isaac Strohecker. Great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren: Vivian, Rylan, and Jack Taylor, Clayton and Noah Hartman, Hadley Horvath, Delilah Moore, Levi, Delaney and Bode Strohecker. She is also survived by a special niece, Tracy Wernecke, and nephew, David Wernecke.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, at King-Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan St., Lewistown, PA 17044, with Pastor Chris Lutz officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will follow at St. Marks Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
