David P. Hayes, 75, of Reedsville, peacefully said goodbye to his family who surrounded him with love and support at his home on Monday, Sept. 21, 2026.
Born on Feb. 18, 1951, in Lewistown, he grew up on Hudson Avenue (Juniata Terrace) with his parents Chester “Pete” and Dolores (Lawler) Hayes, and his brother Michael Hayes, who he always spoke of fondly. He was a 1969 graduate of Lewistown High School and went to work at Standard Steel in 1971, where he worked tirelessly for 41 years, retiring in 2012. He exemplified what it is to grow up in challenging circumstances and persevere to build a life for yourself and your family that you can be proud of. In the summer of 1988, he married the love of his life, Jyl (Steele) Hayes, while at the same time committing to become the father of her two children, Jeremy and Michelle Hayes as well. He loved and looked upon his wife with a depth that we all hope to be loved by another in our lives. He was referred to as “Big Dave” by many who knew him; as he was big in both stature and personality. His wit, humor and smile always managed to outshine his stubborn and outspoken nature. He was very well read and could soak up and recall information so easily that it could make you envious to watch Jeopardy beside him. The latter part of his life was filled with love for and from his family, as he showed tremendous strength to weather through persistent health issues while still spending time with his four grandchildren: Annalisa, Delilah (and her husband Zack), Ashton, Aubrey Grace, and two great-grandchildren as well. He was preceded in death by his uncle, Thomas Lawler Jr., and his aunt Barbara Weaver and is survived by: his wife Jyl, of Reedsville, daughter Michelle, of Lewistown, son Jeremy and his wife Lisa, of Reedsville, a brother Michael Hayes, of Lewistown, a niece Christina Hayes and her daughter Lexie, of Lewistown, and the aforementioned grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well. By his request, there will be no formal services, however, one of the most important things to him was his Irish heritage. In the spirit of a traditional Irish wake, the family is very welcoming of anyone who knew him to get in touch to share your stories and memories of Dave in celebration of his life.
