Hildegard "Hilde" (Brandner) Monroe, of Wetona, Pa., born on May 25, 1934, in Olching, Germany, passed away peacefully on Aug. 23, 2026, in Sayre, Pa. at the age of 92.
Hilde's life was a tapestry woven with resilience, faith, and love. Born into the turbulent times surrounding World War II, she endured the hardships of that era, including the poignant experiences of having her father as a political prisoner. Her early years were vividly captured by her sister, Maria Brandner, in the book “Potato Thief,” which detailed their life during those challenging times.
In 1959, Hilde married Rev. Frank O. Monroe and, in 1960, emigrated to the United States, where she embraced a new chapter in her life. Together, they served various United Methodist Churches, including Wetona, Big Pond, Leona UM churches, Grove Memorial UM Church, Glenwood UM Church, and Park Ave. UM Church. As a devoted pastor's wife, Hilde enriched the lives of many within her community. After retiring from pastoral life in 1998, she and Frank returned to Wetona, Pa.
Hilde's professional journey also included roles as a cook for the Troy Area School District at both Springfield and East Troy Elementary Schools and work at Dank's Department Store in Lewistown, Pa. Despite her many commitments, Hilde always found time to dedicate to her sewing and cross-stitching, hobbies she cherished deeply.
A vibrant spirit, Hilde was truly the life of the party, bringing joy and laughter to any gathering. She was an active member of the United Methodist community and Faith Community Parish, where she formed lasting friendships and connections. Hilde treasured every moment spent with her beloved family and friends.
Preceded in death by her parents, Karl Christian and Maria (Koller) Brandner, her husband, Rev. Frank O. Monroe, and her siblings: Karl Brandner, Maria (Marille) Fye, Richard Brandner, Herbert Brandner, Erma Brandner, and Kurt Brandner. Hilde leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness. She is survived by her sons, Frank D. (Darla) Monroe and Mark J. (Deanna) Monroe; her daughters, Linda (Thomas) Kerek, Sue (Mark) Bullock, and Heidi (Erika) Monroe; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews who will carry her memory in their hearts.
Private services for Hilde will be held at the convenience of her family, and they have entrusted her arrangements to the Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., Troy, PA.
