Edward Henry Brummer Jr.

He was born in Queens, N.Y. near Belmont Racetrack on June 3, 1933, the son of the late Edward Sr. and Olive Brummer. After attending Cornell University and enlisting in the Army, he joined his family who had moved to Sagaponack, N.Y., and he began exploring his passion for farming on rented ground.

Ed married a local potato farmer’s daughter, Margaret (Halsey) Brummer and they were blessed to share 62 years of marriage. They started their family on Long Island, but they realized the only way to pursue their dream of owning a pig farm with Ed being a first-generation farmer was to move away, and they purchased Happy Breeze Farm in Port Royal in 1969. Ed had a passion for meat quality hogs and bred purebred Berkshires and Poland Chinas and was a lifetime member of the American Berkshire Association. He diversified their farming operation to include sheep and vegetables. He joined the Golden Mile Farmer’s Market in Burnham where he sold produce for 50 years and also sold from his home market. They were known for their potatoes and other produce, but also for bringing field dug chrysanthemums to the area.

Ed may have loved farming, but he loved people more. He was famous for rounding down prices and giving extra items to people in need. He had a true servant spirit and lived by the mantra to thank people always. He was quick witted, compassionate, and a father figure to many generations.

He was passionate about serving all people, but mostly his family who were his greatest joy. Ed is survived by his wife, Megs; his sons and their wives: Charles and Pinar Brummer from Davis, Calif., and Peter and Heather Brummer from Millerstown; his grandchildren: Ethan and Maria Brummer, of Millerstown, Ella Brummer, of Lebanon, In., and Oli Brummer of Davis, Calif. His loving sister Barbara McCoy also survives as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at his church, New Harvest Community Church in Millerstown at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18 with a visitation beginning at noon.
