Donald R. “Donnie” Lyter, 73, of Mifflintown, passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital.
Born on July 10, 1953, in Lewistown, Mifflin County, he was a son of the late Holmes and Mildred “Mid” (Parkyn) Lyter.
On April 14, 1973, he married his surviving wife, Barbara M. (Casner) Lyter, with whom he was blessed to share over 53 years of marriage, with the love of his life, before his passing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son; Daniel Lyter and his wife Carolyn; four grandchildren, Mackenzie Orwig and her husband, Will, Riley Lyter, Kash Lyter, and Bailee Lyter. Donnie is also survived by a sister, Cheryl Kint and her husband, Gary, as well as many nieces and nephews who he loved.
Donnie was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, H. Thomas “Tom” Lyter, and a sister, Teresa Swarner.
Mr. Lyter was a 1971 graduate of Juniata High School and was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Mifflintown, where he served on the kitchen committee, and was known for his sauerkraut and scrapple. He was a member of Union Lodge No. 324 F&AM of Mifflintown, where he was a Past Master, Tall Cedars of Lebanon- Juniata Valley Forrest No. 88., and the Deputy Sheriffs Association of Pennsylvania.
Earlier in life Donald worked for the IGA in Mifflintown and Mountz Auto Parts delivering auto parts. More recently, Donnie was a Deputy Sheriff with the Juniata County Sheriffs Office.
He was a well-known storyteller and cook making his Dons Devine Wine, or turtle soup, when they would butcher, chili, and cinnamon pickles. Donnie also enjoyed gardening and bowling. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman and was proud of the family property in upstate New York in the Black Lake area. Above all else, he was a family man who deeply loved his family.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:15 a.m. at East Salem Community Church, 7398 Route 235, Mifflintown on Thursday, July 30, 2026. Interment will follow in the Adams Cemetery, Mifflintown.
A Masonic Service will be conducted at 11 a.m. by the Union Lodge No. 324 F&AM.
A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral services at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Lyter's memory can be made to the Aldersgate United Methodist Church Trustee Committee, 309 Third Street Mifflintown Pa, 17059.
