Samuel ‘Sam’ J. Cook

Samuel “Sam” J. Cook, 90, of Mifflintown, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2025, at his home.

Born March 31, 1935, in Mifflin, he was a son of the late Arthur S. and Marian (Rodgers) Cook.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Eileen (Lauver) Cook, whom he married June 7, 1958, and two children, Colleen Thompson of Carlisle and Glen Cook and wife, Bonnie, of Mifflintown. His five grandchildren, Megan Bookhammer (Shawn), Erica LeHew (Brian), Shane Cook (Nicole), Nicholas Thompson (Taylor) and Ross Cook (Kendyl Morse) and his seven great-grandchildren as well as many other people affectionately called him “Pappy.”

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, A. Jerome Cook, his son-in-law, Wes Thompson, and a cousin he was very close to, Emma Benner.

He graduated from Juniata Joint High School in 1953.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War.

He was a farmer but also worked in maintenance at the Selinsgrove Center and, after retiring, drove school van for Lauver Brothers.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Union Lodge No. 324 F&AM, and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon.

He enjoyed hunting, gardening, his beagle dogs and especially visiting with family and friends.

There will be a Masonic service conducted by Union Lodge at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, at Guss Funeral Home, Inc., 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown followed by a viewing from 6:15 to 8 p.m.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 8, at Guss Funeral Home with Rev. Joanne Torma officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery.
