David Duff Borland

David Duff Borland, 100, of Luther Drive in Lewistown, died on Monday, Dec. 23, 2024, at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital. Born on May 24, 1924 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Charles Borland and Martha Hofmeister Borland. Dave’s wife of 51 years, Isabel Griffiths Borland, passed away on November 26, 1996. Dave was the youngest of 10 children who have all now passed away: sisters Elizabeth, Mary, Charlet, Martha, and Christine, and brothers Paul, John, Samuel and William.

Surviving are daughter Nancy Borland, of Camden, Maine, and son, David Borland Jr. and his wife, Wendy, of Evanston, Illinois, grandchildren Brian Aydelott, Megan Duncan, Jillian Aydelott, Hayley Kinne (Tucker), Julia and Andrew Borland and two great-grandchildren, Adam Duncan and Beau Kinne.

Dave was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps for 39 months. In his retirement years, he attended many reunions and was devoted to preserving the memory of those who served in the 8th Air Force, and of the B-24 that brought him safely home every time.

He was an active and longstanding member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lewistown, and Masonic Lodge #203 of Free and Accepted Masons, receiving his 70 year pin in 2021. He was also a life member of The American Legion (Post 90) and Veterans of Foreign Wars (Post 7011).

Dave and Isabel married on January 11, 1946, having met at the USO Canteen in Pittsburgh. They found their last and favorite home in Lewistown in 1978. He worked at Standard Steel, rising to Chief Executive Officer, until he retired in 1991. He previously worked for 24 years for Westinghouse Electric as an industrial engineer and in other management positions.

In 2008 Dave received the Round Table of Christians and Jews Brotherhood Award for his service to Mifflin County. He also served for many years on the boards of the Mifflin-Juniata Area Agency on Aging (as president for five years), the Mifflin County Industrial Development Corporation, and was a charter member of the Greater Lewistown Corporation. Dave was honored to be named a Paul Harris Fellow for his many years of service to Rotary International.

With respect to Dave’s wishes, private services will be held at the convenience of the family and by invitation at Juniata Memorial Park Mausoleum, Lewistown, with Reverend Charles Hershberger officiating. Military honors will be provided by VFW Post 5863 of Mifflintown.

Memorial contributions in Dave’s honor may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lumina Center or Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, all in Lewistown.
