Samuel R. Helwig, 81, of Thompsontown, passed away at 2:15 a.m. Sunday, June 23, 2024, at his residence.
Born on Nov. 19, 1942, in McAlisterville, Juniata County, he is a son of the late Russell D. and Julia (Varner) Helwig.
On Aug. 20, 1967, he married his surviving wife, Betty L. (Burns) Helwig, with whom he was blessed to share over 56 years of marriage before his passing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Samuel R. Helwig and his wife Amy of Leesburg, VA; one grandson, Nathaniel Helwig; seven siblings, Glenda Helwig, Judy Harling and her husband Ronald, Nancy Rogers and her husband Fred, Roxie Portzline and her husband Robert, Rodney Helwig and his wife Polly, Vicky Selvoski and her husband Tony, and Sharon Brown and her husband Don; one sister in law, Nancy Helwig; and many generations of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three siblings, Ronald Helwig, Shirley Soder, and Gail Cohick.
He was a 1960 graduate of East Juniata High School in Cocolamus and was also a graduate of Williamsport Technical Institute.
Mr. Helwig was employed and retired as an Electrical Engineer from AMP in Harrisburg.
His memberships include the Bunkertown Brethren Church, where in earlier life, he was very active within the church; the former Tennis Lodge No. 371 F&AM in Thompsontown where he served as a Past Master; and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Juniata Valley Forest No. 88. Sam was also an avid hunter in earlier life.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2024, at the Bunkertown Brethren Church, 52 Bunkertown Road, McAlisterville with Pastor Wes Stahl officiating. Interment will follow at Goodwill Cemetery, Bunkertown.
A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral services at 11 a.m. on Friday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Mr. Helwig's memory to the Bunkertown Brethren Church, 52 Bunkertown Road, McAlisterville, PA 17049.
