After battling a leaking, replaced heart valve and a spinal compression fracture for quite a while; Reverend Robert L. Zorn, 93, of Treaster Valley, died peacefully and painlessly in his sleep at Geisinger Hospital just after 6 a.m. on May 24, 2024.
Robert was born in early August of 1930 at home on his parent's dairy and chicken farm near Dawson, Fayette County, PA. One of seven children (Sidney, Eugene, Frank, Helen Zorn Moon, Cora Zorn Hugh, Mildred Zorn Hickman) of the late Frank Adam and Bess (Murtland) Zorn.
His home church was Tyrone Presbyterian at R.D. Dawson, Pa., for the first 21 years of his life. He was baptized and ordained into the Presbytery there and served as student minister. With the help of his wife, Carol, he led worship, conducted youth activities, and published a church newsletter.
He met his wife, Carol Marie (Taylor) Zorn, at Presbyterian Church camp in Laurel Hill State Park in July 1945. They married on Sept. 5, 1953. The couple had four children: William Adam, who died at birth and is buried at Tyrone Presbyterian Church; Robert Lee Jr., retired and living in Mifflinburg, Laurel Beth, retired and living in southern Missouri, and Paul Logan, working at First Quality and living in his parent's home in Treaster Valley. His wife, Carol, is currently a resident at Valley View Nursing Home.
Robert graduated from Dunbar High School in 1948. He then graduated from Waynesburg College with a B.A. Degree in 1953 and from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary with a Bachelor of Divinity Degree in 1956.
Robert preached at the following Presbyterian churches: Pleasant Hills Parish consisting of Dunbar, Laurel Hill, Leisenring, Tyrone, and West Leisenring, Uniontown Area, Tyrone, Burnham, Milroy, and Vira from 1958-1968; Tidioute and Irvine from 1969-1993 and quest ministered at many more.
Rev. Bob was instrumental in the formation and development of Krislund Church Camp. Walking the land when it was still weeds and woods. He ran the very first camper week as first executive director and played a major role in its' growth, operation, and the hiring of its' first long-term director.
Robert was a member of Lewistown Presbyterian Church and Minister of Visitation until Sept. 29, 2019 when he retired, in name only. He continued to serve faith-fully for the rest of his life.
Rev. Robert Zorn's entire life has been one of service and sacrifice to the church, the community, and his family. It has been said more than once that everyone in Mifflin County is or knows someone who Rev. Robert L. Zorn has baptized, married, or buried.
A viewing will be held from 10 a.m.-noon. on Friday, May 31, 2024 at Milroy Presbyterian Church, 321 S. Main Street, Milroy. The service will begin at noon with Pastor Joy Kaufman officiating. The burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Milroy. King Funeral Home & Crematory in Reedsville is in charge of arrangements.
