Robert D. "Bob" Smith, 93, of Lewistown, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 26, 2024.
Born Aug. 27, 1930, in Bellefonte, he was the son of the late J. Albert Smith, Sr. and Doris A. (Bryan) Smith. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his siblings, Camelia (Jane) Lose, J. Albert Smith Jr., Orlando (Pete) B. Smith, Doris (Tom) E. Capparelle, Barbara R. Shultz, and his infant brother, Lee Smith.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Barbara J. (Wance) Smith, whom he married on Jan. 22, 1957, his daughter Karen Cramer and husband, Henry (Hank), of Lewistown, daughter Kimberly Ryan Smith and companion, Raven Sanchez, of Indiana, Pa., granddaughter, Kristi Cramer and companion, Eric Hewitt, of N.H., sister Mary Reid, of N.Y., brother Fred Smith and Yvonne, of Bellefonte, and many nieces and nephews.
Robert graduated from Bellefonte Area High School in 1948, then immediately joined the United States Navy. He proudly served his country from June 1948 to June 1952, during the Korean Conflict, aboard the USS Roanoke CL-145.
Earlier in life, he was employed by Warner Co. in Bellefonte, Piper Aircraft in Lock Haven, where he worked as a welder from 1958 to 1982. Robert then worked for Penns Valley Area High School, as a groundskeeper, retiring in 1994.
In his earlier years, Robert loved hunting, roller skating, cars and riding his motorcycle. Later he enjoyed reading, playing cards, dominos, camping, riding around in his golf cart or scooter, Cross Country Coach bus trips, participating in the Mifflin County Senior Olympics, and bowling on teams for the church league and senior league in Lewistown.
Robert was active in the United Methodist Church all his married life, holding numerous positions throughout the years. Along with his wife, they spent 18 years as 'snowbirds", splitting their time between Pa. and Riverview, Fla., where he served in many positions at the Rice Creek Park Chapel. He loved God, family and friends, all of whom brought him great joy.
Robert was a 1st class member of the Smith Pletcher Post 779 American Legion in Centre Hall.
A memorial service in loving memory of Robert will be held at noon on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at King Funeral Home, 47 Carriage House Lane, Reedsville with Pastor Chis Lutz officiating. There will be a visitation held from 11 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.
