William "Bill" J. Hartman, 88, of Lewistown, passed away on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024 at Greenwood Village.
Born Sept. 23, 1935, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late John and Emma Lucretia (Montgomery) Hartman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Cliff and Kermit Hartman, and a sister, Paulette Wernecke.
Bill is survived by his wife Edwina "Winnie" (Mohler) Hartman, whom he married in 1956. Together they enjoyed 67 years of marriage, raised a loving family and travelled extensively.
A 1954 graduate of Lewistown High School, where he played baseball, basketball and soccer, Bill served as class president for three years and later was instrumental in planning class reunions and get-togethers. After high school, Bill attended Juniata College and graduated from Lock Haven University with a bachelor's degree. He earned a master's degree from Clarkson College in New York and principal degree from Penn State University.
Bill worked as a teacher and later principal in the Mifflin County School District, retiring in 1993 after a more than 35-year career. During his employment, Bill organized the Teacher's Credit Union, which ultimately merged with the AVC Federal Credit Union and operates today as the First Area Federal Credit Union, where he served as Board President for 50 years until retiring in 2021.
He was a longtime member of the Chief Logan Lions Club and Trinity United Church of Christ, where he taught Sunday school for more than 50 years, sang in the choir and served as president of the church council. Bill enjoyed volunteering in retirement at Meals on Wheels and Lewistown Hospital. Later in life, he attended Trinity United Methodist Church with his wife. Bill was a Penn State football, Pittsburgh Steelers and Boston Red Sox fan who loved attending his grandchildren's sporting events, hunting, fishing, working in his yard and cooking meals for family and friends.
In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by his son Brent Hartman and his wife Lori, Milroy, Pa.; his daughter Deborah Grube and her husband Jere, Manheim, Pa.; and his son Cory Hartman and his wife Michelle, Keller, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Megan Taylor (Jason), Jay Hartman (Lacey), Rachael Horvath (Jeff), Hailie Moore (Riyo), Amanda Grube (fiancÈ, Aaron Sweger), Zach Hartman (Trina), Melissa Grube; step-grandchildren: Jake Strohecker (Emily) and Isaac Strohecker; great-grandchildren: Vivian, Rylan and Jack Taylor, Clayton and Noah Hartman; and step great grandchildren: Levi, Delaney and Bode Strohecker.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, Jan. 20, at King-Barr Funeral Home, 120 Logan Street, Lewistown, with Pastor Chris Lutz officiating. Visitation at the funeral home will begin at 11 a.m. until the time of the service at noon. The burial will be private.
