Edward M. "Ed" Mayes Sr., 80, of Mifflintown, passed away on Friday, Jan. 19, 2024 at Brookline Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Mifflintown.
Born on July 17, 1943 in Granville Twp., Mifflin County, he is a son of Albert "Bert" and Dolly (Shade) Mayes who preceded him in death. On Oct. 6, 1962, he married Janet L. (Stover) Mayes, who survives, with whom he was blessed to share more than 61 years of marriage before his passing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Edward Mayes, Jr. and his wife Deb of Mifflintown and Donald Mayes of McAlisterville; three grandchildren, Westin Mayes and his wife Amber, Chad Mayes and his wife Erika, and Bethany Aukerman and her husband Ryan; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Glenda O'Donnell of Milroy and Marjorie Kauffman of Lewistown.
Mr. Mayes was a 1961 graduate of Lewistown Area High School.
He began his career at Standard Steel in Burnham as a Boring Mill Operator, then became a Job Leader and retired as a Supervisor after more than 38 years of service.
Ed was a former member of Stony Run Mission of McAlisterville and had previously attended Oakland Mills Evangelical Methodist Church.
He enjoyed hunting, being outdoors, and watching football, especially the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers; however, his greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024, at Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 111 Westfall St., McAlisterville with Minister James Neimond officiating. Interment will follow at Union Memorial Gardens, Mifflintown.
A viewing will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2024 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Mayes' memory may be to the charity of ones choice.
