J. Richard "Dick" Henry, 89, of Lewistown, Pa. passed away peacefully on Oct. 4, 2023, at his home in the William Penn Healthcare and Rehab Center.
He was born on Sept. 13, 1934 to the late David Blaine and Eleanor Patterson Henry of McCoysville, Pa.
After graduating from Juniata Joint High School in 1952, Dick worked on his family's farm until he enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Germany.
Dick met his wife Susan in 1955 and the two married on Nov. 29, 1958. They made their home near Granville, Pa where they were active community members for more than 60 years.
Throughout his life, Dick enjoyed a variety of occupations beginning when he operated a barber shop on North Grand Street in Lewistown. Over the next 15 years, he worked at the American Viscose Corporation and Standard Steel, all the while developing his business as a sign maker, which became his full-time occupation in 1980.
Well-known for his creativity, Dick loved drawing and painting from an early age. He also enjoyed photography, model railroading, woodworking and built a wooden boat on which he learned to sail. His creative passion eventually turned to music when he taught himself to play the violin and piano. With an interest in gospel and bluegrass music, and drawing on his woodworking skills, he built an upright bass and loved playing with friends and family.
Dick was devout in his faith and a committed member of the Granville United Methodist Church. His service there included membership in the Church Council, Board of Trustees and Sunday School teacher. He was actively involved with the Lumina Center of Lewistown since its beginning where he exemplified his faith in service to the children, youth and families of his community.
Dick's presence will be missed his family, friends and neighbors and all those who cared for him during the past year.
Dick is survived by his son, Douglas Henry and wife Elizabeth Crisfield of Boalsburg, Pa. and his daughter, Odessa (Henry) Fennen and husband John Fennen of Dover, Pa. along with four grandchildren, Ayden and Carter Fennen and Ames and Willa Henry. Dick is preceded in death by his wife, Susan Jane Henry who passed away on Sept. 6, 2023 and his son, John Patterson Henry who passed away on Sept. 27, 1975.
A visitation will be held from 10-11 am on Friday, Oct. 13, 2023 at Granville United Methodist Church, 1346 N. River Road in Granville, Pa. The service will begin at 11 am with Pastor Kim Cartwright officiating. Burial will follow at the Pine Glen Brethren Cemetery off SR 103 North in Bratton Township. A luncheon will be served immediately afterward at the Granville United Methodist Church.
