Donna M. Treaster, 79, of Lewistown, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2021, at William Penn Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Nov. 5, 1941, in Warsaw, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Alfred W. and Pauline Mae (Beaumont) Shumaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, William Shumaker, and brother-in-law, Anthony Urbanczyk.
Donna married the love of her life, David Nelson Treaster, who survives, on April 18, 1964. Also surviving are her sons, Eric David Treaster and wife Elena, of Lewistown, Mark Nelson Treaster and wife Kathryn, of Harrisburg and Luke Andrew Treaster and wife Alison, of Pittsburgh. The oldest of six children, she is survived by siblings, Carol Ann Shumaker, of Tucson, Ariz., George A. Shumaker and wife Nancy, of Statesboro, Ga., L. Sue Urbanczyk, of Adams, N.Y., and Mary Coates and husband Dennis, of Catonsville, Md. She is survived by grandchildren, Samantha M. Treaster and Noah G. Treaster and sister-in- law Judy Shumaker, of Warsaw, N.Y.
Donna was a graduate of Warsaw Central High School in Warsaw, N.Y., class of 1959. She then received a bachelor's degree from Albright College in 1963 and a master's in social sciences from Temple University in 1971.
After graduation, as a licensed social worker, Donna held a variety of positions including Children and Youth Services, the Department of Public Welfare, serving as a consultant and social worker for local nursing homes and finally served as a self-employed therapist retiring in 2002. Throughout her professional career, she was a member of The National Association of Social Workers and The Academy of Certified Social Workers.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Lewistown. Serving on various committees, she was a former Sunday school teacher and was a delegate for St. John's Synod Assembly and served several terms as a member of the Upper Susquehanna Synod Council. She served on church council for several terms and even served as council president in 2011; she was the second woman in the history of the campaign to hold that presidential position.
In June, 2000, she was installed as the authorized lay worship leader of the Upper Susquehanna Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America as a pastoral substitute. In that position, she led worship services at St. John's Lutheran Church and various other local churches.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, 2021, at King-Barr Funeral Home LLC, 120 Logan St., Lewistown.
A memorial service in loving memory of Donna will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 120 N. Main St., Lewistown, with Rev. Allen Hulslander to officiate.
Private graveside services will be held in Lind Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Donna's memory are respectfully encouraged to St. John's Lutheran Church, 120 N. Main St., Lewistown.
