Betty Nale

Mrs. Betty Hartley Nale age 97, of Lewistown, PA. passed away early Saturday morning, January 9th 2021.

She was born July 5th, 1923 to the late J. Irvin Hartley and Gertrude M. Stumpff in Maitland, PA.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Robert L. Nale. Also preceding her in death were three brothers- Howard Hartley, Clair Hartley, Ray Hartley; and two sisters Sara Bell and Louise Millhouse. Betty was the last surviving family member of the original Hartley’s Potato Chip Company.

Her final years and moments were spent living independently in her modest home. Betty and her husband Bob raised their three daughters while living on Electric Avenue for 37 years together. Betty was a true depression-era child whose habits and ways extended thru her entire life. She recalled selling bags of potato chips door to door with her father at the young age of 12. For many years after Hartley’s Potato Chips expanded she worked in the factory to help the family business. In her later years, she enjoyed completing puzzles at her puzzling table and beating any challengers in a game of Rummy 500 which she most always humbly won. Her family was a treasure to Betty as she tried her best to remember which great grandchild belonged to which family.

Betty also took great pride and felt a responsibility in giving financially to many Veteran’s groups over the years.

Betty is survived by her three daughters and two sons-in-law, Virginia Swigart and her husband Roger, Barbara Crotty and her husband Edward, and Linda Habbershon; her nine grandchildren – Eric Crotty, Drew Swigart, T. Grant Habbershon, Kyle Crotty, Meredith Nastasi (Habbershon), Chad Swigart, Tricia Crotty, Jonathan Habbershon, and Natalie Holmes (Habbershon) as well as their spouses. Betty was blessed with a legacy of 18 great-grandchildren. She leaves many other family members and friends that will sadly miss her. She was known by most as MiMi Nale.

Due to COVID-19 regulations there will be no viewing and a private memorial service is being planned by the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rhodes Memorial United Methodist Church or UPMC Family Hospice.
