Our children spend seven hours a day, five days a week, for 180 days at school. Our teachers, administrators, counselors, paras, nurses, janitors, secretaries, cafeteria staff and coaches; support, care for and teach our children and grandchildren in so many ways. They are managing behaviors, teaching math and reading, helping with life skills and trying to meet each child at their individual level, which we must see as no small task.
As followers of Jesus, we are called to love our community and see the needs around us that we may be able to meet. I believe it is important to see the needs and ways we can love and support our schools. My challenge to each of us is to consider one step we can take towards meeting a need if we haven't already. There are so many small opportunities, that if we all did something, it would make a huge difference. This is, of course, not an exhaustive list, but a starting place to consider where you can share the love of Christ through one of these small gestures.
Send an encouraging note to a teacher, administrator or staff person.
Donate food, hygiene items or clothes to the school nurses and counselors for families in need.
Email your child's teacher to see if they need anything donated for the class.
Volunteer your time to help with school activities.
Pray for the students, teachers, administrators and staff.
The more we see how valuable the substantial efforts are of those who work in our schools, the more we should be reminded as believers, the responsibility we have to encourage and support them in as many ways as possible. Then maybe those teachers and staff may feel a little more cared for and a little stronger to keep doing the important work ahead of them.
