Sacred Heart thrift shop provides service to community

LEWISTOWN -- For 32 years the people of Sacred Heart Thrift Shop have provided service to the community. Much of the shop's success has to do with the efforts of Donath Korbich.
Korbich has been there from the beginning when the shop was formed through the Knights of Columbus and the leadership of Fr. McDermott. Looking back on those days, Korbich says it was all about the community.
"It was something to be able to help people," Korbich said. "That's what we were doing. It made you feel good, it really did and we've all become much friendlier. We're like sisters instead of just seeing each other at church and things."
The shop was originally on Market Street in Lewistown before eventually moving to the current address at 4 N. Dorcas St. in 2017.
Korbich got her start during off days when she wasn't working alongside her dentist husband Dr. Steven Korbich, now retired.
There are currently 11 volunteers who help keep the shop going including Korbich. Looking back through all the years at the thrift shop, Korbich is amazed at the different people who have come in and out of the shop. People she never thought would be there shopping in a small town. She appreciates the experience of getting to know people and listening to their stories.
"Everything seems to be working out," she said. "People who come in are friendly to us because they keep coming, and we're friendly with them. We talk to them. Usually when anybody comes in, if I don't recognize them, I say 'are you local?' If they tell me 'no,' they'll talk about where they're from. We've had them here from Lancaster, everywhere really. I don't know how they knew about us but they come in and we have a good time."
