BURNHAM — A consortium of local churches and businesses have purchased the former Burnham Hardware Store and are in the process of making it into a center where residents can go to learn skills to rebuild their lives.

The building is currently undergoing a major facelift and organizers are seeking volunteers to offer help with things like painting, carpentry and cleaning to get things started.

The building will be called the Mifflin County Dream Center, and, according to Jill Pecht, coordinator, will be used for things like life skills classes for adults looking to improve themselves.

She envisions people going to learn things like balancing a checkbook, various trades and groups for individuals in recovery.

“Our goal is to have different activities so people can learn to rebuild their lives and learn some skills,” She said.

Pecht hopes to hold an open house as early as spring.

Organizers hope to be able to offer programs to the community for free and are seeking grants and donations to subsidize or eliminate costs. They plan to hold fundraisers in the future.

“We would like to use this to bring some life back to the community,” Pecht said.

While the program is faith based, Pecht said the programs would be available to anyone, regardless of their religious beliefs.

New Life Church has affiliated with some local businesses and Clear Concepts Solutions to get the program off the ground.

“We’re all working together to build this center to enhance our community and help the people in t he community,” Pecht said. “It’s going to be amazing because I think God is behind it. We need to keep faith in our community and I think this is big step to help that grow. We want to grow diciples that can share the love of Christ with others.”

When the building is complete, Pecht said she hopes to be able to connect with other entities like CareerLink and local food banks.

“If anyone has ideas of things they would like to see happen in the Center, we would like to hear them,” she said
