HARRISBURG -- A Bloomsburg man has been sentenced to 13 to 26 years in state prison for opening fire outside a Mount Carmel bar in 2022 after a neighbor complained about loud music coming from his vehicle.
Attorney General Dave Sunday announced Thursday that 40-year-old Bruce Thompson received the sentence after pleading guilty to a charge of persons not to possess a firearm because of a prior felony robbery conviction.
A jury had previously convicted Thompson of discharging a firearm into an occupied structure, carrying a firearm without a license, recklessly endangering another person and fleeing and eluding police.
A Northumberland County judge imposed the sentence Thursday on all charges.
"This kind of violence has no place in our society, and this sentence sends the appropriate message," Sunday said in a statement. "This defendant recklessly opened fire, striking a nearby home where children slept inside, before shooting a neighbor."
According to prosecutors, Thompson had been at a Mount Carmel bar before getting into his vehicle and playing loud music. After a nearby resident asked him to lower the volume, Thompson allegedly opened fire, striking a home occupied by children before shooting a neighbor.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy Attorney General Julia Van Leeuwen.
