STATE COLLEGE -- More than $1.18 million in state funding has been awarded to State College Borough and College Township for traffic signal improvements aimed at reducing congestion and improving safety along key roadways in the Centre Region, state Rep. Paul Takac announced Tuesday.
The grants are being awarded through Pennsylvania's Green Light-Go program, which provides reimbursement funding to municipalities for projects that improve the operation and efficiency of existing traffic signals.
State College Borough will receive $997,755 to expand communications between four adjacent traffic signals and upgrade vehicle detection equipment at 10 intersections. The work includes intersections along University Drive, North Atherton Street, South Atherton Street, East Branch Road and West College Avenue, as well as additional locations serving downtown State College, nearby neighborhoods and Penn State's University Park campus.
College Township was awarded $190,175 to upgrade traffic detection equipment at the intersection of Shiloh Road and Dreibelbis Street.
Takac said the projects are intended to improve traffic flow while enhancing safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
Green Light-Go grants support improvements such as traffic signal retiming, upgraded detection systems, LED signal technology, special-event traffic management and other traffic signal enhancements. The projects will be funded through the 2026-27 fiscal year appropriation.
