MADISONBURG -- The Madisonburg Water Works has been awarded an $875,000 grant through the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) to fund improvements aimed at protecting drinking water quality, according to state Rep. Kerry Benninghoff, R-Centre/Mifflin.
The funding will be used to upgrade the water system's infrastructure to ensure it can safely inactivate microorganisms, including viruses and bacteria, in the drinking water supply. The project also includes the purchase of a new chemical vault to securely store hazardous materials, flammable liquids and other toxic substances used in the treatment process.
"I applaud the board of directors for taking the initiative to undertake the grant process and bring this particular need to my attention," Benninghoff said. "This project is an example of the many benefits that are available to communities statewide through PENNVEST and demonstrates how government can work responsibly to improve our overall quality of life in the Commonwealth."
Madisonburg Water Works serves approximately 250 customers in Miles Township and the surrounding area.
