Heightened security expected, ahead of NFL Draft in Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH — As preparations continue for the upcoming NFL Draft, officials are expanding both land and water security measures across Pittsburgh ahead of the expected influx of more than half a million visitors.
Attorney General Dave Sunday is urging fans to enjoy the event safely while warning that law enforcement will maintain a heightened presence throughout the city.
The opening round of the draft begins April 23, bringing large crowds that are expected to strain transportation systems and fill hotels, bars, restaurants, and retail areas.
State officials said the scale of the event increases the potential for criminal activity. The Office of Attorney General will deploy additional agents to Pittsburgh in coordination with local, state and federal partners who have spent more than a year planning security operations.
“This event has caused a lot of excitement for the city of Pittsburgh, football fans, and everyone planning to attend the many events surrounding the draft — I wish you all a safe and enjoyable weekend,” Sunday said. “To the bad actors with ill intentions who think they can blend into the crowds and prey on unsuspecting visitors — think twice, we will be watching. Along with our partners, we will be on site in full force.”
Officials are urging attendees to remain alert for potential crimes including human trafficking, drug trafficking, and scams or theft, particularly involving counterfeit merchandise. Consumers are advised to use trusted retailers, be wary of deals that seem too good to be true, and monitor financial accounts for suspicious activity. Anyone who suspects trafficking is encouraged to contact the National Human Trafficking Resource Center at 888-373-7888 or text 233733.
Separately, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission announced it will assist the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Pittsburgh in enforcing a temporary security zone on portions of the Ohio River, Allegheny River, and Monongahela River during the event.
The security zone will be in effect from 12 a.m. April 23 through 11:59 p.m. April 25, 2026, covering areas near Rivers Casino, the Roberto Clemente Bridge, and the Fort Pitt Bridge.
During that time, all recreational and commercial vessel traffic will be prohibited from entering the designated areas without authorization from the U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port or on-scene patrol commanders. Mariners seeking permission to transit must contact MSU Pittsburgh at 412-670-4288 or via VHF-FM Channel 16.
Officials advised boaters to plan ahead and expect possible delays on local waterways.
“Our team and the partners involved in securing the NFL Draft and surrounding areas have familiarity and experience with large-crowd events, so there are tactical plans in place,” Sunday said. “We look forward to showcasing the great city of Pittsburgh, but will not sacrifice safety for a good time, no matter what.”
