HARRISBURG -- The Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded $849,309 in grants to four Pennsylvania organizations that provide adaptive sports programs for veterans and active-duty service members.

The funding is part of $16 million awarded to 91 organizations nationwide to expand recreational and competitive opportunities for veterans with disabilities.

Programs offer activities such as archery, skiing, cycling, wheelchair softball, hunting and fishing to promote rehabilitation, independence and healthy lifestyles.

"Through these grants, we're strengthening access to adaptive sports programs that make a meaningful difference in the lives of Pennsylvania veterans," said Derek Coughenour, executive director.

Since the Adaptive Sports Grant Program began, the VA has awarded more than $150 million nationwide.
