MIFFLINTOWN -- From hayrides and games to fall festivals and outdoor adventures, the Juniata River Valley has plenty to offer this weekend as autumn settles into the region.

Families can kick off the weekend festivities Saturday at Cedar Spring Community Park in Mifflintown, where a Family Fun Fest will bring together food, games and entertainment while raising money for the park.

The event, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will feature a cornhole tournament, hayrides, barrel cart rides, a Chinese auction, bounce house and other family-friendly activities. Proceeds will benefit the community park.

For those looking to embrace the season’s traditions, Little Buffalo State Park in Newport will host its annual Apple Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

A tradition since 1979, the festival highlights Shoaff’s Mill, the only operating grist mill in Pennsylvania’s state park system. Visitors can watch corn and apples being processed using methods dating back more than 190 years.

The festival also features apple cider, fresh cornbread, apple butter, craft and food vendors and historical demonstrations, including blacksmithing, falconry and fiber arts.

Admission is free, with donations and proceeds supporting restoration efforts for the park’s historic water wheel.
