LEWISTOWN -- The Derry Township Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a $22,960 quote from Flint Ridge Repointing, LLC to rebuild the fireplace in the green pavilion at Kish Park.
"The fireplace is very old and hasn’t been used for some time," said Township Manager Kelly Shutes.
Shutes shared details of two bids from the McClure contractor: one to repair the existing fireplace, estimated at $14,675, and another to completely rebuild it, estimated at $22,960.
The approved fireplace reconstruction involves pouring a concrete footer, building a structured frame with 8-inch block, installing fireboxes lined with fire brick, and creating an exterior frame cover with veneer. The estimate quotes high-heat-approved mortar and a new structure that matches the existing look and size.
This project will be budgeted in 2027. In the meantime, the park manager placed a note on the fireplace that reads, “Please do not use the fireplace."
Supervisors also discussed a complaint Shutes received regarding an aggressive dog at the Kish Park playground.
According to an email Shutes received, a local woman alleged that she was standing near the park when her child asked for help going down the slide; she stated: "I can’t come over there; the dog will nip someone."
The correspondence also alleged that another family was approaching the playground when the little girl saw the dog and started to walk over, but the father stopped her.
Supervisors stated that they take these complaints seriously, and while they can’t ban leashed dogs from the entire park, they are considering banning dogs from the playground area.
Supervisors urged residents with aggressive dogs not to bring them to the park.
Supervisors tabled a vote on the potential ban but plan to address the issue at a later date.
In other news, the board approved a park use application for the Geisinger Walk in the Park for Arthritis, slated for May 1, 2027, and approved a 1% rate increase for the Pennoni 2027 rate schedule.
Shutes also stated that the 2027 liquid fuels estimate is $284,732.29. Shutes said this amount is decreasing each year due to the rise in electric vehicles.
Shutes said that over the last four years, the amount has decreased by $4,000 each year.
