UNIVERSITY PARK -- Shanghai Ballet will return to North America for the first time in more than five years, bringing its production of the classical ballet "Giselle" to Penn State's Eisenhower Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5.
Led by Artistic Director Xin Lili, the company will present its interpretation of the 19th-century ballet, a story of love, betrayal and grief that has remained a staple of classical dance since its premiere in 1841.
Shanghai Ballet’s production emphasizes technical precision, coordinated ensemble performances and emotional storytelling.
Founded in 1979, Shanghai Ballet is one of China’s leading ballet companies, known for combining classical ballet traditions with elements of Chinese artistry.
Under Xin, a former principal dancer, the company has expanded its repertoire to include traditional European ballets as well as works inspired by Chinese folklore and literature.
Tickets are $60 for adults, $14 for Penn State University Park students and $19 for those 18 and younger.
Tickets are available online through the Arts Ticket Center. Purchases made by phone at 814-863-0255 or in person at Eisenhower Auditorium avoid the $4 online fee. The ticket office is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The performance is presented by Penn State’s Center for the Performing Arts, part of the College of Arts and Architecture.
