HUNTINGDON -- The State Correctional Institution at Huntingdon has opened a diesel mechanic shop that will provide vocational training to incarcerated individuals.
The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday for the new Pennsylvania Correctional Industries shop. Six incarcerated men will participate in the first class.
The program will combine classroom instruction with hands-on training using diesel equipment and performing maintenance and repairs. According to the Department of Corrections, participants will receive training designed to prepare them to pursue Automotive Service Excellence certification, a Pennsylvania state inspection license and Mobile Air Climate Systems Association Section 609 certification after their release.
The shop also will provide diesel-related services for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and other government entities.
The program is operated by Pennsylvania Correctional Industries, which runs vocational shops at state correctional institutions throughout Pennsylvania. PCI funds its operations through the sale of products and services to state agencies, local governments and other eligible organizations.
