LEWISTOWN -- Motorists traveling through Mifflin and Juniata counties next week may encounter traffic delays as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation conducts road maintenance, bridge repairs and other improvements on several state highways.

PennDOT announced its maintenance schedule for the week of Oct. 19, with work planned on Routes 22, 322 and 522, along with several secondary roads in Mifflin County. Additional projects are scheduled along Routes 35 and 75 in Juniata County.

In Mifflin County, crews will conduct base repairs on Wakefield Road (Route 3007) in Oliver Township from Monday, Oct. 19, through Friday, Oct. 23, and on Crossover Drive/Long Lane (Route 2001) between Back Maitland Road and Route 522 in Derry Township from Wednesday, Oct. 21, through Friday, Oct. 23.

Base repairs involve removing damaged pavement and underlying material, replacing it with new material and applying fresh asphalt to restore the roadway’s structural integrity.

Bridge maintenance is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 20, along Route 322 westbound at the bridge spanning Woodland Road and Tea Creek, approximately one mile north of Reedsville in Brown Township. Single-lane closures will be in effect during the work.

Crews also will perform bridge maintenance Tuesday on Main Street (Route 1005) at the bridge spanning Buck Run in Burnham Borough. Flaggers will direct traffic during daylight hours.

Crack sealing and hot-pour mastic work is scheduled Thursday, Oct. 22, and Friday, Oct. 23, along Route 22 between Substation Road in Wayne Township and Evergreen Road in Oliver Township.

The process seals cracks and joints in asphalt pavement to prevent water from entering and causing potholes or other deterioration.

Additional pavement patching is scheduled Monday, Oct. 19, and Tuesday, Oct. 20, at three locations:

– Route 522 between its junction with Route 322 in Lewistown and Meadowbrook Lane in Derry Township.

– Main Street (Route 1005) between Indian Lane in Derry Township and Mill Pond Drive in Brown Township.

– Route 22 at the off-ramp for Route 522/Walnut Street in Lewistown Borough.

Flaggers will provide traffic control during daylight hours at the repair locations, and pilot vehicles may be used to guide motorists through work zones.

In Juniata County, PennDOT crews will conduct bridge maintenance and cleaning along Swailes Road (Route 2015) at the bridge spanning Little Cocolamus Creek, approximately one mile north of Cocolamus in Fayette Township. Work is scheduled Monday, Oct. 19, through Friday, Oct. 23.

The work will take place on or beyond the shoulder and is expected to have minimal impact on traffic.

Crack sealing and hot-pour mastic operations are scheduled along Route 35 between Academia Road in Beale Township and Main Street in Fermanagh Township from Monday, Oct. 19, through Wednesday, Oct. 21.

Similar work is planned along Route 75 between Route 74 in Turbett Township and East River Road in Walker Township through Friday, Oct. 23.

Crews also will replace and clean drainage pipes along Route 75 between Robinson Lane in Tuscarora Township and Johnson Road in Spruce Hill Township from Monday, Oct. 19, through Friday, Oct. 23.

Flaggers will direct traffic during daylight hours at the Route 35 and Route 75 work zones, with pilot vehicles deployed as needed.

PennDOT reminds motorists that when encountering a pilot vehicle displaying a “Pilot Car Follow Me” sign and revolving yellow light, they must remain behind the vehicle until it leaves the roadway. Passing a pilot vehicle is prohibited.

All scheduled work is subject to change because of weather, emergencies or other unforeseen circumstances.
