REEDSVILLE -- James "Jimmy" Conway, Mifflin County’s veterans affairs officer, said during a Thursday Mifflin County Veterans Organization meeting that many events are on the horizon as Veterans Day approaches.
Conway shared the following event dates and info:
•Saturday, Nov. 7, beginning at 11 a.m., a veterans luncheon will be held, with entertainment and lunch to follow at the Calvary Bible Church located at 100 Calvary Lane, Lewistown. RSVP by today by calling (717) 248-5409. One guest may attend. Burnham OIP is catering lasagna, salad, bread, and dessert.
•Saturday, Nov. 7, beginning at 11 a.m., the veterans’ parade, hosted by the VFW, will be held in Milroy.
•Wednesday, Nov. 11, the annual Veterans Day program at the historic Mifflin County Courthouse will feature grade schoolers who have been practicing their "field of flags" all summer.
•Saturday, Nov. 14, City Hook and Ladder Fire Co. is hosting a Veterans Day parade in the Borough of Lewistown.
Conway said of the children's "field of flags" program at the courthouse, "All the parents are excited; they’ve been working really hard."
During the meeting, Mifflin and Juniata County Human Services Director Melissa Stewart also told attendees about the assistance the human services department offers veterans.
Stewart said Mifflin Juniata Human Services is a local government department that answers to commissioners in both counties and that the department’s services are funded by grants.
Stewart said the department helps many people with unstable housing.
"This could be anyone, homeless or moving from one place to the next, who can’t maintain housing with the cost of rent and other bills," said Stewart.
She said those seeking assistance from the human services department must meet certain program requirements, but the department waives some for veterans.
The department helps veterans facing eviction due to shut-off notices, and Human Services uses what Stewart calls its energy bank to help in these cases.
"Usually there is a copay based on income, but for vets that is waived," said Stewart.
