ORWIGSBURG -- With the Tournament of Bands Pennsylvania State Championships coming to Kish Bank Field at Donald M. Chapman III Stadium in Lewistown on Saturday, the Mifflin County High School Marching Huskies could not have asked for a better tuneup.

Mifflin County traveled to Blue Mountain High School in Orwigsburg and posted a season-best score of 87.84 to capture the Tournament of Bands Susquehanna Valley Regional Championship in Group 3-A, a nearly five-point improvement from its previous score of 82.85.

The Huskies also earned special awards for Best Percussion and Best Auxiliary. Bass drum player Anthony “AJ” Dean was recognized as Player of the Week.

The strong showing gives the Huskies momentum as they prepare to host the state championships, where they will have the rare opportunity to compete for a title on their home field.

"Regions was the culmination of the wonderful week the band had," Mifflin County High School Director of Bands Brandon Kahley said. "They worked extremely hard this week, and it showed on the field."

Despite temperatures falling into the low 40s during the evening competition, the Huskies delivered their highest score of the season. The chilly conditions posed additional challenges for the color guard, whose routines require precise tosses, catches and twirls, but the band responded with one of its strongest performances of the year.

The regional championship performance continued the Huskies’ upward trajectory heading into the season’s biggest event. Rather than traveling across the state for the championship competition, Mifflin County will make the short walk from the band room to Kish Bank Field as host of this year’s state championships.

"I couldn't be more impressed at the students' drive to improve even so late this season," Kahley added. "It was a great night for a great show and that's exactly what the students did."

After capturing the Region 4 title and posting their best score to date, the Marching Huskies will enter the state competition with confidence and momentum.
