MILL HALL -- As autumn winds swept across Malinak Stadium at Central Mountain High School on Saturday, the Mifflin County High School Marching Huskies once again proved why they continue to be one of the state’s premier competitive bands.
Against a backdrop of brilliant oak and maple leaves painting the surrounding ridges in shades of gold, orange and crimson, the Huskies delivered another strong performance that earned them first place in the Class 3A competition during the Tournament of Bands event, hosted by Central Mountain.
"Despite being our coldest day yet, the Mifflin County Marching Band prevailed," said Mifflin County High School Director of Bands Brandon Kahley. "Performing the best show so far this season, increasing our score and standing within the state. The students came out to work hard, and succeed they did. I couldn't be more proud of the students as well as thankful to the parents and staff for all of the support so far. The only way to go is to keep moving forward."
The performance marked another step forward for a show that continues to evolve each week. For the first time this season, Mifflin County unveiled large scenic backdrops that added a new visual dimension to the production, complementing the band’s music and field presentation.
Despite gusty conditions that created challenges throughout the performance, particularly for the color guard performers handling flags and equipment, the Huskies remained poised and polished.
“The wind definitely made things more difficult, especially for the guard,” Kahley noted, “but the students never seemed rattled.”
The group’s commitment to refinement has become a hallmark of its season. While new elements continue to be added to the production, band members are also focused on tightening every detail of their musical and visual performance as championship competitions draw closer.
That dedication showed in the judging results.
Mifflin County earned a score of 82.85, topping the Class 3A field and continuing a remarkable season in which the Huskies have consistently found themselves at the top of the standings.
Adding to the celebration, guard member and flag soloist Katelynn Rupert was honored with the Performer of the Week Award for her outstanding efforts.
The competition featured performances from Bucktail Area, Southern Tioga, Corning-Painted Post (N.Y.), North Schuylkill and host Central Mountain.
For the Huskies, another first-place trophy was more than just another entry on an impressive resume. It was further evidence that a season built on hard work, attention to detail and steady improvement continues to trend in the right direction.
Week after week, the Marching Huskies have met every challenge placed before them. Saturday’s performance was simply the latest example of a group that continues to shine as it heads toward the heart of the fall competition season.
With each performance becoming sharper and each victory adding to their confidence, the Huskies have established themselves as a band to watch wherever they take the field.
