MIFFLINTOWN -- A household hazardous waste event for Juniata County citizens is being offered for the first time on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Port Royal Fairgrounds.

Juniata County Conservation District Manager Lori Glace told Juniata County commissioners Tuesday the event will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. at 308 W. Eighth St., Port Royal.

Glace on Tuesday sought approval to apply for grant funding to hold the event. She said The conservation district secured partial sponsorship from the Department of Environmental Protection, but it must submit the grant application, according to Glace.

“We won’t know the exact cost until after the event, but they do pay half of the amount,” Glace said.

“This is the responsible way to recycle these items. Please don’t toss them in your household trash and come to this event,” said Juniata County Commissioner Alice Gray.

Household hazardous waste includes any products that can be hazardous to humans, wildlife or the environment when not properly controlled or disposed of. These products can be corrosive, flammable, toxic, oxidizing or cause other kinds of harm and often come with warning labels on their containers. Common household hazardous waste includes batteries, motor oil, paint, drain cleaners, pool chemicals and pesticides, among others, she said.

Glace explained there are certain fees depending on the item, but generally the cost is $1 per pound.

For the 2026 recycling event, the Juniata County Conservation District can only accept items listed in the event advertisement, which can be found on its Facebook page.

No electronics or tires can be recycled at this event, and organizers cannot accept 25- or 50-gallon drums.
