MIFFLINTOWN -- A book sale brings a particular kind of anticipation, the kind that feels a little like opening a door to possibility.

The Friends of the Juniata County Library are leaning into that feeling as they prepare for their fall book sale which starts on Monday, Oct. 19 and runs through Thursday, Oct. 22.

For four days, the Juniata County Library in Mifflintown's book sale room (on the lower level of the library) will transform into a treasure hunt for readers of every age, offering shoppers the chance to fill a bag with books, magazines, CDs and DVDs for $7. Jigsaw puzzles will also be available for $3 each, adding a hands‑on option for families who enjoy a quiet challenge.

This year's sale arrives with extra momentum thanks to its timing during National Friends of Libraries Week, a nationwide celebration of the volunteers who help keep libraries vibrant.

The Friends group is marking the occasion with a members‑only preview sale on Monday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon. Organizers say the preview is more than just early access. It's a chance for longtime supporters to reconnect, for new members to join the Friends, and for shoppers to renew their membership for 2027 so they can step into the sale before the crowds arrive.

The preview has become a tradition that regulars look forward to, a quiet morning where the tables are freshly stocked and the best finds are still waiting to be discovered.

Once the preview wraps, the sale opens to the general public during the library's regular hours Tuesday, Oct. 20 through Thursday, Oct. 22. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and 9 a.m.. to 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Volunteers will restock throughout the week, ensuring that even late‑week shoppers have a strong selection to browse. The Friends say they've spent months sorting donations, organizing genres and building a layout that makes it easy for visitors to explore. Fiction, nonfiction, children's titles, young adult favorites and seasonal reads will all have dedicated sections, giving the sale the feel of a pop‑up bookstore built entirely by the community.

With the holidays approaching, organizers note it's not too early to start shopping for the book lovers on your Christmas list. The fall sale has become a quiet kickoff to the holiday season, a place where shoppers can find a stack of mysteries for a friend, a pile of picture books for a grandchild or a few cookbooks to inspire winter meals.

This year's selections include bestselling authors, a huge variety of children's books and the most requested titles for young adults. Volunteers say they've seen an uptick in donations from families who spent the summer cleaning out bookshelves, which means the tables will be full of fresh inventory.

Beyond the shopping, the sale is a reminder of how much the Friends group contributes to the library's mission. All proceeds support programs, services and improvements that help the library serve Juniata County. Over the years, the Friends have funded summer reading prizes, technology upgrades, children's programming and special events that bring the community together.

The fall sale is one of their largest fundraisers, and organizers say every bag filled helps strengthen the library's ability to offer resources and opportunities to residents.

For shoppers who haven't attended before, volunteers encourage making a trip of it. The sale is designed to be welcoming, with tables spaced for easy browsing and volunteers available to help visitors find specific genres or authors. Many shoppers return multiple days, treating the sale like a rotating discovery as new items appear throughout the week.
