CENTRE HALL -- A $1.4 million drainage improvement project is underway in Centre Hall Borough, resulting in the temporary closure of a portion of East Locust Street.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that work was scheduled to begin Monday, Oct. 19, to improve drainage and prevent uncontrolled water flow from damaging the roadway.

East Locust Street is closed between Route 144 and Colyer Avenue while crews complete the improvements. Motorists are being directed to follow a detour using Cherry Alley and Witmer Avenue to reconnect with East Locust Street.

PennDOT anticipates reopening the roadway by the end of October, although the schedule could change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Additional work is planned for the 2027 construction season, when crews will complete drainage improvements along Route 144 and install new traffic loop sensors at the intersection of Routes 144 and 192.

Flaggers will direct traffic during daylight hours while that work is underway. PennDOT said it will provide an update before construction resumes next year.

The overall project includes drainage inlet and pipe installation, paving, line painting and other related improvements.

Mitchell Knorr Contracting of Bloomsburg is the contractor for the $1.4 million project.
