CENTRE HALL -- A $1.4 million drainage improvement project will begin Monday, Oct. 19, in Centre Hall Borough, resulting in a temporary road closure and detour, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Beginning Monday, East Locust Street will be closed between Route 144 and Colyer Avenue while crews complete drainage improvements designed to prevent uncontrolled water flow from damaging the pavement and extend the road’s service life.

Motorists will be directed to follow a detour using Cherry Alley and Witmer Avenue to reconnect with East Locust Street.

PennDOT anticipates reopening the road by the end of October, although the construction schedule could change depending on weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances.

Additional work is scheduled for the 2027 construction season, when crews will complete drainage improvements along Route 144 and install new traffic loop sensors at the intersection of Routes 144 and 192.

Flaggers will provide traffic control during daylight hours while that work is underway. PennDOT said it will issue an update before construction resumes next year.

The overall project includes installation of drainage inlets and pipes, paving, line painting and other improvements.

Mitchell Knorr Contracting of Bloomsburg is the contractor for the $1.4 million project.
