Superintendent gives opening day an A

Major projects around district are wrapping up

MIFFLINTOWN -- If she could pass out grades for opening day in the Juniata County School District, Superintendent of Schools Christie Holderman would have given out all A's.

"It went well," Holderman shared with the district's board of directors at their monthly meeting on Thursday at the administration building in Mifflintown.

There might have been a hiccup here and there, but overall school officials were pleased. Holderman and the board did address a few personnel needs that will allow the schools to better serve students.

Holderman also gave updates on several projects, including the new school tennis courts. She expects the courts to be completed by October. Coaches with the tennis program are hoping to add a girls team to complement the highly-successful boys program. Previously, all players have suited up for the boys.

Holderman said the roof project at East Juniata High School is "moving along."

A third project - the new vestibule entrance at Tuscarora Junior High School in Mifflintown - is waiting on door controls to finish it. "Once they are received, we can use that entrance," Holderman said.

The board approved the following facility use requests:

• Nancy Kramer, Paul W. DeLauter Center tutors, Juniata Elementary School cafeteria, after-school tutoring program, Tuesdays, Sept. 28, 2026 through May 2027, no fee;

• Robert Digon, Tuscarora Intermediate Unit No. 11 Early Childhood Services, East Juniata Elementary School cafeteria, parent meeting, Oct. 8, 2026, no fee;

• Maggie Shafferman, Child Evangelism Fellowship, Juniata Elementary School cafeteria, After-School Good News Club, Wednesdays, Oct. 14, 2026 through April 28, 2027, no fee;

• Sharielle Willow, Juniata Elementary PTO, Juniata Elementary School grounds, Trunk-or-Treat, Oct. 18, 2026, no fee;

• Jen Field, Juniata Elementary School gymnasium, practice and games, Mondays and Wednesdays, Oct. 28, 2026 through March 2027, no fee;

• Sharielle Willow, Juniata Elementary PTO, Juniata Elementary School facilities, vendor show, Nov. 20-21, 2026, no fee.
