BELLEFONTE -- The Nittany Valley Symphony will open its season Sunday, Sept. 20, with "Dreams of the Forest," a concert featuring works by Debussy, Sibelius and Brahms.
The concert is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Bellefonte Area High School.
The program will open with Claude Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun," followed by Jean Sibelius' rarely performed tone poem "The Wood Nymph."
"The Wood Nymph" disappeared from the concert stage after 1936 and was not performed again until its rediscovery 60 years later in 1996. According to the symphony, Sunday's performance will be one of only a handful of performances of the work in the United States.
The concert will conclude with Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 3, a work from the Romantic repertoire that moves between contrasting moods of joy and loneliness and moments of intensity and introspection.
The program is intended to take audiences through three distinct musical landscapes reflected in the concert's "Dreams of the Forest" theme.
Tickets are $33.85, including fees, for adults and $7.18, including fees, for students and youth. Tickets may be purchased in advance through the Nittany Valley Symphony website or at the will-call table on the day of the concert.
