Mifflin County opens season with win at Black Diamond competition

SHAMOKIN -- The Mifflin County High School Marching Huskies didn't just return to competition Saturday -- they came back in full stride, proving that last year's championship momentum is alive and well.
Fresh off their 2025 Tournament of Bands Group 3A Atlantic Coast Championship, where they scored 90.17 to claim their fourth title in eight years, the Huskies opened the new season at the Black Diamond Tournament of Bands at Shamokin High School.
Their 2026 show, "A Nation in Motion," bursts with patriotic flair -- brass fanfares, bold percussion, and color guard choreography that celebrates the spirit of America.
Mother Nature, however, had her own plans. As a Nor'easter swept through the region, steady rain forced the competition indoors. The change meant bands had to adapt quickly -- trading sweeping field formations for a stationary stage performance inside the high school auditorium.
The adjustment didn't faze Mifflin County. The musicians packed tightly onto the stage, filling the room with a wall of sound that turned the limitation into an advantage. The color guard made the most of the space, weaving flags and rifles through their routines with precision and poise.
The result was electric. The condensed setting amplified every note, giving the audience a powerful, up‑close experience. When the scores were announced, the Marching Huskies once again stood at the top -- first place to open the season.
"Despite the rainy weather, the Mifflin County Marching Band performed wonderfully after being moved to an indoor facility to compete," Mifflin County High School Director of Bands Brandon Kahley said. "While being made a standstill performance, it put the band in the best element to succeed with a great first-year score in music.
"The flexibility of the students, volunteers and staff was extremely appreciated as well," Kahley added.
Senior saxophone soloist Griffin Damicantonio added an exclamation point to the night, earning the Performer of the Week Award for his outstanding musicianship.
For a band that thrives on discipline, teamwork and showmanship, Saturday's performance was more than a win -- it was a statement. Rain or shine, field or stage, the Marching Huskies continue to set the tempo for excellence.
