LEWISTOWN -- Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital is among seven Geisinger hospitals recognized for efforts to promote organ donation awareness and education.
The Lewistown hospital received a Platinum designation from the Gift of Life Donor Program as part of the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania’s annual Donate Life Pennsylvania Hospital Challenge.
Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital, Geisinger Medical Center Muncy and Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital also received Platinum designations.
Geisinger Community Medical Center, Geisinger Medical Center in Danville and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center received Titanium designations.
The annual statewide challenge encourages hospitals to increase awareness of organ, eye and tissue donation among employees, patients and their communities.
The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania partners with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the state’s two organ procurement organizations, the Center for Organ Recovery & Education and Gift of Life Donor Program, on the initiative.
“Organ donation has the power to transform lives and give hope to patients waiting for a lifesaving transplant,” said Dr. Jason Mitchell, Geisinger’s executive vice president and chief medical officer and a member of the association’s board of directors.
Mitchell said the recognitions reflect efforts by hospital employees to educate communities about organ donation and support patients and families throughout the donation and transplant process.
