STATE COLLEGE -- The Central PA Civil War Round Table will hold its annual joint meeting with Penn State's George and Ann Richards Civil War Era Center at 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at the South Hills School of Business & Technology, 480 Waupelani Drive, State College.
Timothy J. Williams, an associate professor of history at the University of Oregon and a Mark and Ann Persun Visiting Scholar at Penn State's Richards Civil War Era Center, will present "Assembling the South's Lost Cause in Union Prisons."
The program will examine how Confederate prisoners held in Union prisons began developing some of the earliest versions of what became known as Lost Cause history.
While historians have extensively studied Civil War prisoners of war, including prison conditions, surveillance, health, death and survival, Williams' presentation will focus on a less-explored aspect of Confederate imprisonment.
The presentation will examine how prisoners used personal memories of imprisonment, shared grievances and camaraderie to begin assembling narratives that would contribute to Lost Cause interpretations of the Civil War.
Members of the Central PA Civil War Round Table and anyone interested in joining the organization are invited to attend.
