HARRISBURG -- Nine projects across Centre County will receive more than $1.3 million in state funding for water infrastructure, road maintenance, public safety, recycling and community facilities, state Rep. Paul Takac, D-Centre, announced Tuesday.
The funding was awarded through the Commonwealth Financing Authority's Statewide Local Share Account program, which uses gaming revenue to support projects serving the public interest across Pennsylvania.
Centre County PAWS received the largest award, $300,000, for an expansion and renovation project designed to improve animal care, safety and shelter operations.
The Milesburg Borough Water Authority was awarded $279,400 to replace water mains on Cross Street. The project is intended to improve reliability and safety while reducing long-term maintenance costs.
Snow Shoe Township will receive $149,165 to purchase a roller for maintaining approximately 40 miles of township roads. The equipment will allow the township to conduct more regular road maintenance while eliminating equipment rental costs.
Howard Township received two awards totaling $196,487. The township was awarded $146,487 for a utility truck and trailer equipped with traffic-control devices and cargo boxes and $50,000 for a mini excavator to improve efficiency and safety during roadway and construction projects.
Liberty Township will receive $129,057 to purchase a skid steer with a paver and milling head for road construction and maintenance.
Discovery Space of Central Pennsylvania Inc. was awarded $125,000 to develop a comprehensive master plan for future expansion. The planning work will include site analysis, architectural design and program and business plans.
The Centre County Recycling & Refuse Authority will receive $100,000 for transportation equipment intended to improve the efficiency of glass recycling.
Mountaintop Area Municipal Authority was awarded $50,000 to purchase a truck with an attached crane. The equipment is expected to streamline maintenance operations and reduce injury risks for employees.
"These grant awards reflect what people here have asked for -- improved facilities, planning grants for community-based education programs, water and recycling system upgrades, and the tools our local townships need to keep roads in good shape and improve worker safety," Takac said.
The awards total $1,329,109.
