HARRISBURG -- A Carlisle man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the March death of a U.S. Army reservist during firearms training at Letterkenny Army Depot.
Sean Stark, 38, was charged by criminal information in federal court, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced Monday.
According to federal prosecutors, Stark is accused of killing Private First Class Krystofer Lopez on March 12 while conducting firearms training at Letterkenny Army Depot. Prosecutors allege Stark conducted the training in a "grossly negligent manner."
The U.S. Attorney's Office also filed a plea agreement in which Stark agreed to waive indictment and plead guilty to the involuntary manslaughter charge. A hearing for Stark to enter his guilty plea has not yet been scheduled.
"The circumstances surrounding Mr. Lopez's death are heartbreaking for his family and loved ones," U.S. Attorney Brian D. Miller said. "I hope this prosecution brings some relief for the family while ensuring that justice is delivered."
If convicted, Stark faces a maximum sentence of eight years in prison, followed by a term of supervised release, as well as a fine. Any sentence would be determined by a federal judge after consideration of federal sentencing statutes and guidelines.
The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Scott Ford and Alisan Martin are prosecuting.
A criminal information contains allegations, and Stark is presumed innocent unless and until he is found guilty in court.
